Seeking to Understand

Do you seek to understand or do you seek to be understood?

Most people don't listen with an intention to understand the other person. Most of the time, they are listening for a space in which they can reply, some time with a random remark out of context!

A few weeks ago, I took part in an internet radio broadcast on the subject of listening with my good friend Al Gonzalez. In the show, we share insights such as listening with your whole self, connecting with your non-judgemental child and respecting diversity.

You can hear the show right here:

Alternatively, go and check out Al's show at Web Talk Radio.

Listening is a fundamental way of showing you respect the person you are with and when you truly listen, you have all the information you need to adapt your behaviour with them.

This is such a critical leadership competency, yet too often under exercised. Listening is a real must for anyone who wishes to be considered a leader.
