What's the reason for hiring an external coach?

For some time now, I have wondered about the motivation behind an organisation's decision to hire an external coach. Is it to solve a performance problem? Or is it to help support a leader or team to achieve a goal based on the potential being demonstrated?

Most coaches I know will stress that the intention behind coaching is to focus on the coachee's potential, not his or her performance. However, in my experience over the years, an external coach is often called in to work with an under performing leader or team. In some cases, the performance issues have been side stepped by the line manager and responsibility for facing the problem is abdicated to the coach.

  1. Seeking for progress and improvement on business is the main reason for hiring the external coach. The external coach is most important to performs specific functions. The external coaches are hired for the motivation and to improve the external abilities.
